If you think you’ve found serenity sitting lakefront, under the stars and around a campfire, Sunfish Cannabis is ready to enhance your experience just a little bit more.

On April 20, Craig Hamilton plans to unlock the secure doors on the Kawarthas’ latest cannabis venture, located on Queen Street in the north end of Lakefield, next to the Subway franchise.

For the past 50 years or so, 4/20 (both the date and time) has been celebrated among the cannabis crowd as a time to celebrate marijuana. Pre-legalization, many would choose that date to protest laws prohibiting it. Hamilton says the fact they are aiming for an April 20 opening is a little coincidental. He wasn’t expecting approval to come through for another month, but when his timeline was advanced, he figured it would be a good date to kick things off.

He still needs to pass one more inspection ahead of that date, but the shop is just about set up and it already meets the strict legal requirements of security, construction and design.

Hamilton, already a broker well known in real estate circles in the north Kawarthas, says over the past year or so, people have become better educated about the benefits of cannabis and how to use it safely. But for those north of Peterborough, access has become a bit of an issue. The two options have been to make the longer drive, or order from a government-sanctioned website.

People in this area have been looking for something more readily available, and closer to home, he says. And at the same time, it’s a convenient stop for the large cottage industry north on Highway 28 and beyond.

Customers will definitely note a cottage theme to Sunfish Cannabis when they visit the store.

As the grand opening nears, Hamilton will be able to fill in a few blanks still seen on the Sunfish website and he will be permitted to bring in a wide range of product, including flower, drinks, edibles, seeds and tinctures, along with CBD oils, topical creams and more.

He will soon offer online ordering through the website as well.
