JERUSALEM (Reuters) -Israeli police fired stun grenades in the direction of Palestinians who threw rocks and petrol bombs at officers exterior Jerusalem’s flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque on Friday, hours after Israel and Hamas reached a ceasefire in Gaza.
Police raids of the compound and clashes with Palestinians throughout the Muslim holy month of Ramadan helped spark off violence between Israel and Gaza’s Islamist rulers Hamas, who after 11 days of combating agreed to a truce early Friday.
At midday, hundreds of Palestinians gathered within the tree-lined compound surrounding the mosque for Friday prayers. Many stayed on to show in assist of Palestinians within the Gaza Strip, cheering and waving Palestinian flags.
An Israeli police spokesman mentioned that among the Palestinians gathered threw stones and petrol bombs in the direction of officers who had been stationed alongside the compound’s gates. The officers responded by dispersing them, the spokesman mentioned.
A Reuters photographer mentioned police fired stun grenades in the direction of the Palestinians. It was not instantly clear what set off the clashes.
The confrontations died down inside about an hour, with Israeli police retreating to their positions on the compound’s gates. Medics mentioned 20 Palestinians have been wounded, with two transferred to hospital for therapy.
The compound, which sits atop the Outdated Metropolis plateau identified to Muslims as al-Haram al-Sharif, or The Noble Sanctuary, and to Jews as Temple Mount, is essentially the most delicate web site within the Israeli-Palestinian battle.
Israel sees all of Jerusalem as its everlasting and indivisible capital, whereas the Palestinians need the japanese part, together with the walled Outdated Metropolis, as a capital of a future state. Israel’s annexation of East Jerusalem is unrecognised internationally.
