Teva has been making sandals for the journeyman and journeywoman since 1984 in the Grand Canyon by a young raft guide. The guide strapped two Velcro watchbands to an old pair of flip-flops, preventing them from floating off the foot. Innovative sandals as they were at the time, Teva patented its universal strapping system for a modernized opened-toe sporting shoe. The average adventurer has grown to love and wear their sandals, pushing them to the limit.
Today, the environmental sporting shoe brand, Teva, is announcing the TevaForever Recycling Program in partnership with TerraCycle, a leading international recycling and waste management expert. TevaForever is dedicating its value-driven, circular plan to the life-cycle of the beloved Teva sandals. The recycling program is Teva’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact and a sustainable future.
The TevaForever allows the Teva wearer to give back in a simple way and dispose of their well-worn sandals. Vice President and General Manager of Teva, Anders Bergstrom, says, “The partnership with TerraCycle is a huge step forward in our ongoing commitment to minimize our brand’s environmental impact. The TevaForever Recycling Program gives our fans an easy way to join the cause, knowing we will give their sandals new life.”
Teva permits the owners of “well-loved” sandals to mail their old pairs to a TerraCycle facility at no cost to the customer. Sandals are diverted from landfills, cleaned, broken down, and processed by manufacturers.
The manufacturers then upcycle the processed material for practical application. Applications include track ground cover, playgrounds, and athletic fields. The long-term goal for Teva is to eventually close the loop in their production of sandals, turning worn pairs into new pairs.
Known for their iconic universal strapping system, Teva transitioned to 100% verifiable and traceable, recycled plastic using REPREVE yarn in 2020. REPREVE has been responsible for removing and recycling 25 million plastic bottles from their ocean graveyards.
Teva has diverted over 40.2 million plastic bottles since 2020, over 1.5 million pounds of plastic from landfills. With the help of TerraCycle, Teva is normalizing a process for their signature sandals to be recycled and reduce its carbon footprint.
The TeraForever Recycling Program perpetuates the shoe line into the 21st century of modern manufacturing. Teva has also reduced its Greenhouse Gas Emissions by approximately 6.6 million pounds since 2020.
Teva has reduced its water usage at factories and is working with supply chain partners to improve water conservation throughout their operations. The CEO and Founder of TerraCycle, Tom Szaky, says, “The TevaForever Recycling Program offers consumers the opportunity to recycle their well-loved sandals while preserving the environment for generations to come.”
Teva has been a pioneering spirit that customers who seek adventure relate and connect. TeveForever’s recycling program is an example of satisfying a customer base while executing Sustainable Development Goals. Customers have the freedom to explore in a pair of Teva’s, and the shoe company has had the opportunity to do the same with their customers.
The recycling program is simple to participate in with a prepaid shipping label from Teva.com. Once you sign up, you can download the shipping label and mail the sandals directly to TerraCycle in the goodwill of closing the loop.
